Working on the previous example of using Canva and thinglink to form interactive educational tools, I moved ahead to look into another aspect which I found really interesting when I viewed Bandura and social learning theory. The social experiment revolves around children watching  adult performing violent behaviours and replicating their actions.

The idea of placing social learning into an environment such as Instagram relates to a more effective experience through collaboration in a graphical and micro-blogging experience.

The environmental stimuli in a social media context will draw audiences and other learners to build on a common response. Theortically, a community and continuum of learning can be achieved through the likes of social media platforms. For example, pictures of certain important concepts of the lessons and short videos of educators demonstrating a formula can be used to enable a better learning retention and learning experience. Learning can not only happen intuitively but also in a ‘safe house’ where they can afford to make mistakes and learn from the mistakes they have made. They can use it to build a repository of learning and search for contents when they become necessary. In addition, learners will become self directed as they take ownership of creating content that are not only relevant, but also pleasing to their level of understanding. They will be able to grasp and understand variations of the same concept in many different ways.

Driving on the 4 principles of social learning that Bandura has created, I will be discussing and reflecting on some elements that educators can use in a classroom environment relating to both creating Instagram content, categorizing content according to the relevant chapters and searching for relevant content.

Observation (environmental)

An instagram context would link closely to social media. The enrivonment and platform must be suitable and safe for both learners and educators to make mistakes. The mistakes that they make will allow them to improve incrementally, and to observe the key improvement areas that they should consider. Learners can use graphical apps such as textgram to summarise concepts that are most important in their lesson. This lesson can be sequential according to the different hashtags that the educators assigned. For example, a hashtag #karlmarxlesson1 on a sociology concept relates to a summary of students perception on an introductory for karl marx’s marxist theory. Students from different classes can search for their classmates perceptions and comment according to how they felt about another student’s comment. Concepts for each theory can be broken down into bite size learning so it can be digested easily through a social media platform. Learners can possibly create a network chain of learning thoughts through this hashtag or user depending on the needs and preferences.

Mistakes from the learner would mean learners can afford to try as many times as possible. Learners can upload a picture for a short moment before deciding that a more appropriate one should be used instead. They can create as many pictures using tools like canva. Canva would serve as the platform to create marketing poster samples, key learning reflections in one sentence and also graphical notes that add the most value to them.

Retention (cognitive) and reproduction

Retention would be obtained through the constant images and videos relating to a hashtag or user. Retention would require the learner to understand the concept  using as much graphical representations as possible. The learner will regurgitate the concept (surface level), use the concept as a supporting tool to solve complex problems. Instagram is a resourceful tool that allows all learners to access specific contents when required. Reproduction in a social learning context would not only include regurgitate content, but also placing the correct contents in its context. reproduction of content can initially start at a understanding level before moving to application. Alternatively, if learners are familiar with concepts as they might have built prior knowledge  ( constructivism), they would be able to produce not only context, but also place the information in a familar environment to them.  Learners during the course of learning via instagram has to be managed as wrong interpretations might be eatablished from the prior knowledge that learners have established.

Motivation

Educators play a vital part on motivation in this world of social media. Maximum engagement with his/her class can be obtained via thorough screening of the contents that are broadcast ed via instagram. Educators must make learners aware that they are responsible for effective learning to take place, as it is also important to note that not every answer maybe a good answer, but every answer is a step to an improvement that learners can make. Answers may require educators moderation techniques, amd ensure that the learners stay relevant to the topics and not be drifted to another. The idea is to build an objective driven learner that has efficacy, instrincially motivated by learning and to build a growth mindset in the long run.

Summary

In conclusion, learning in a social environment is a highly effective and engaging where replication of behaviour would occur most of the time. To enable learning to be effective, consider the platform and environment in which learning takes place. There are multiple platforms in which social learning can take place, but each environment must be safe for learning and free from the distractions of social media.
